About Amateur Radio Awareness Month

Amateur Radio Month focuses on the contribution of amateur radio, or Ham Radio to science, engineering, industry, and social services. Research by amateur radio operators has founded new industries, built economies, empowered nations, and saved lives in times of emergency. Ham radio can also be used in the classroom to teach English, map skills, geography, math, science and computer skills.

Before the internet, amateur radio enthusiasts found each other around the world and chatted much like we do today via instant messaging and email. Today the world wide ham radio network still connects people the world over and it is often the only way of communicating and coordinating in the event of natural catastrophe or emergency.
