ASH WEDNESDAY (C)
About Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the season of Lent (the 40 days leading up to Easter). In ancient times it was believed that throwing ash over your head indicated to God that you were repenting (changing your ways and asking for forgiveness).
Today within the Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and other mainline churches, devote worshipers will have their foreheads marked with a cross in ash (called the imposition of ashes). This cross must wear off rather than be washed off as a sign of the beginning of Christ’s sacrifice and the initiation of Lent. To receive the imposition of ashes is considered a great blessing.
