BAKED BEANS MONTH
About National Baked Beans Month
"National Baked Bean Month is an unofficial food observance month most likely created to compliment hotdogs. Beans and Franks is a typical summer picnic dish.
Of course there is a lot more to beans than the kinds we generally see: brown, lima, pinto, black and blackened. Use this month to experiment. Try using Cranberry Beans, with their creamy texture and nutlike taste, most frequently used in a favorite in northern Italian, Spanish and Portuguese cuisines for a different take on baked beans. Or the Adzuki, often used in Asian cuisine.
Beans are economical, protein packed and a great food staple. Once you learn how to cook beans, the options are endless.
The Been Council has pictures and definitions of the most common types here: http://www.usdrybeans.com/resources/varieties"
