About World Choir Month
"2012 saw the first World Choir Month officially take place in July and the bi-annual World Choir Games in the same month. It was declared by the US Senate and is supported by INTERKULTUR, a non-profit and commercial organizations which promotes culture and hosts the World Choir Games.
HISTORY OF CHOIRS
Choir simple means a musical ensemble of singers. Choir music has existed since the 2nd Century BC and originated in Greece. At the time it simply meant group singing. During the Middle Ages, rather than having a single melody, choirs began to experiment with multiple melodies and later isorhythmic motets and later during the Renaissance, the addition of a cappella. During the Baroque period, solos were added and Opera further refined this genre of music. It was in Venice, Italy during the mid 1500s that orchestration, vocal concertato, was added to the choral mix.
Choirs were intimate, small and nothing like we see today with dozens of people and full orchestration. they performed either in churches or private setting (chambers, ergo ‘chamber music’). The first major choral operatic piece that resembles today’s choir traditions was composer George Handel’s Messiah, first performed in 1741.
Today choir music can be found in popular music as well as churches, films and public performances. The best known professional choirs in the world include the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from Utah, The Vienna Boys Choir from Austria. As of this writing, the Stellenbosch University Choir of South Africa is ranked #1 in the world.
