About Herbal Prescription Awareness Month

Herbal Prescription Awareness Month occurs in July and is sponsored by the Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc.

With the rise in over the counter supplements and the increased reliance on prescription drugs hospitals and doctors are seeing a marked increase in illnesses resulting from herbal medicines interacting with prescription drugs.

Herbal medicines can interact with prescription drugs in three ways:

Causing an exaggerated response of that effect of the prescription

Counteracting the effect of the drug

Inhibit absorption of a prescription by the body leading to the patient not getting enough medicine.

This month is dedicated to learning about the side-affects and potential interactions of herbal medicines and the prescriptions you take. Check with your pharmacist and ask for a list of any herbs known to cause issues with your prescription.
