About Cinco de Mayo
A lot of Americans think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. It’s not. Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for the “5th of May” marks the anniversary of Mexican Army's entrenchment and ultimate victory in the city of Puebla against the French army of 1862. This was during the Franco-Mexican War, which ran concurrent with the American Civil War (1860-1864) from 1861-1867. The French were ultimately defeated.
Though not a big holiday in Mexico, it has become the official party to kick off summer in the United States and also serves a day to celebrate Mexican culture, food and dance. In Hispanic neighborhoods in the US and throughout Mexico Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals. Bars and Restaurants in the US often have Cinco de Mayo parties. The official drink is the Margarita or straight tequila.
