About Bhishma Ashtami Hindu Ritual
Bhishma Ashtmai, also known as Magha Shukla Ashtami is the anniversary of the death of Bhishma Pitamah, from the story of Mahabharata. Bhishma was celebrate and was rewarded for his loyalty by being given the honor of choosing the time of his death.
Celebrations, (especially for those whom have lost a father) consist of a ritual called Ekodishta Shradhha. the Shradhha (or Shardha) is performed at various times of the year. It is a way to pay respect and salutations to one's ancestors. The ceremony usually includes offerings of food to one's pitras (ancestors whose souls have obtained eternal rest because their descendants have performed the funerary rites as required). It can also include feeding Brahmins (priest cast in Hindu) or certain animals, like dogs, cats, crows and snakes.
