About Car Insurance Day
First Issued by Traveler’s Insurance: 1897 to Gilbert J Loomis who owned a one-cylinder car. It is unknown if this is the anniversary of that policy.

The United Kingdom is responsible for the idea of mandatory car insurance for licensed drivers/owners of vehicles. UK Parliament passed the Road Traffic Act in 1930, the debate on the house of Lords of which was held in January of that year. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Geo5/20-21/43

Personal Note from Laura on this Event

Car Insurance isn’t something all countries have. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for instance does not have car insurance. Should you injure or kill someone driving in that country, you must compensate the injured or his/her family immediately and risk losing everything.

Saudi Arabia is also the only country in the world that prevents women from driving…which without car insurance to protect them and their families from financial disaster could be a blessing. In fact Saudi Arabia consistently ranks as one of the top five most dangerous countries in which to drive.

Take a gander at some of these Saudi men drifting in the streets. In most cases, these are not stunt drivers. Nor are these closed courses. This was common even in downtown Riyadh where I lived:

Perhaps if women drove, they’d insist upon insurance, (and more traffic police). One can wonder. I just know having lived in Saudi Arabia for a short time, I did enjoy having a chauffeur, but longed to be able to drive on my own, though there is no way after seeing cars do this on city streets for sport, I would have. Oh, yes, the white coat the young men are wearing is called a thobe.
