About International Eggnog Day
December 24 each year is known as Eggnog Day. This unofficial holiday piggybacks on the Christmas tradition of drinking eggnog during the holidays, with or without alcohol, and either hot or cold.
In Europe, eggnog was mixed with wine. In the United States, it is often mixed with rum, brandy or Grand Marnier. The original name of eggnog was “egg and grog in a noggin. A noggin was an old world wooden cup used to serve drinks at a tavern. If drinks were served by the fire, they were served in tankards, not noggins.
For those of us who grew up in the 1970s or prior, you may recall a an American version of the thick European Eggnog known as a Tom and Jerry. Unfortunately, the company that made the batter went out of business in the 1980s…which is why, outside of some small independent grocers in the upper Midwest, you can’t find Tom & Jerry batter anywhere.
But never fear. Tom & Jerry’s are one of this writer’s favorite winter time drinks. When I was tasked with writing and illustrating Corky Hale’s music infused Christmas Book, “Have Yourself a Jazzy Little Christmas Party” (Available on iBooks for iPad https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/have-yourself-jazzy-little/id578085867?ls=1&mt;=11)
In addition to words and music to 12 holiday songs performed by legendary harpist and pianist Corky Hale, the book includes 26 holiday themed party ideas, a guide to wine pairings and glasses, plus recipes for hot drinks including Tom & Jerry.
