EPILEPSY MONTH, NTL. (CA)
About National Epilepsy Month in Canada
National Epilepsy Month in Canada is a national awareness campaign. It occurs in March each year. The US version of this event occurs in November. The United Kingdom has an epilepsy awareness week in May.
The word "epilepsy" is derived from the Greek word meaning a condition of being overcome, seized or attacked.
Epilepsy is not a disease, it is a symptom of a neurological disorder - a physical condition - that from time to time produces brief disturbances in the normal electrical functions of the brain. Epilepsy is characterized by sudden, brief seizures whose nature and intensity vary from person to person.
Approximately 0.6% of the Canadian population has epilepsy. This includes those who take anticonvulsant drugs or who had a seizure within the past 5 years.
