FIBROMYALGIA EDUCATION & AWARENESS MONTH
About Fibromyalgia Education & Awareness Month
Fibromyalgia Education & Awareness Month occurs in May each year. It was started by Californian based National Fibromyalgia Association. Due to budgetary limitations caused by the Great Recession the National Fibromyalgia Association does not appear to be actively promoting this month as its initiating sponsor. However several organizations around the globe have picked up on it with localized events.
Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain disorder that affects an estimated 10 million people in the U.S. and an estimated 3-6% of the world’s population. While fibromyalgia (FM) occurs in men and children of all ethnic groups, 75-90% of those that have this disorder are women.
Those with Fibromyalgia experience chronic widespread body pain as well as moderate to extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties. Often they are sensitive to touch, light and sound and can develop irritable bowel syndrome, lupus and arthritis.
This month is about focusing awareness on Fibromyalgia and creating increased understanding of the disease and the struggles its victims deal with on a daily basis.
