About Military Appreciation Month
National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM), created in 1999 was originally designated by Congress. The purpose is to learn more about the history and recognition of US armed services as well as the individuals and achievements.
Events tied to National Military Appreciation Month include:
Loyalty Day (1st) on May 1
VE (Victory in Europe) Day on May 8th
Military Spouse Appreciation Day May 9th
Armed Forces Day May 17
and Memorial Day, the last Monday in May.
This is a month about honoring, remembering, recognizing and appreciating all military personnel; those men and women who have served throughout our history and all who now serve in uniform and their families as well as those Americans who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms we all enjoy today.
It recognizes those on active duty in all branches of the services, the National Guard and Reserves plus retirees, veterans, and all of their families - well over 90 million Americans over the past 230 years.
Funds raised during this month go to The Armed Forces Children's Education Fund, Inc. and other non-profits geared at assisting those who serve, have served and their families.
The USO has put together the following ideas and actions that allow you and your community to show support.
