About Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the UK
Ovarian Cancer Action of the United Kingdom hosts Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month each March. The goal is to reach woman in the UK with the tools and knowledge each needs to know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer – currently only 20% of women in the UK can name the symptoms of ovarian cancer.
The campaign also seeks to promote early diagnosis of the cancer. If caught in the early stages of ovarian cancer a woman has a 90% chance of surviving for more than five years but this reduces to 22% when diagnosed in the later stages.
The month is also designed to encourage women to explore their family history of ovarian cancer and discover if they’re at risk. Women who inherit a faulty gene known as the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have a 35-60% of developing ovarian cancer.
