About National Pig Day
National Pig Day occurs on March 1 in the United States each year to celebrate pigs…the animal kind...not the male kind. The first National Pig Day was started in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher in Lubbock, Texas, and Mary Lynne Rave of Beaufort, North Carolina. Its sole purpose is to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals..

Today Pig Day does not have an official sponsor or organizer. It is simply celebrated through custom by zoos, schools and other industries throughout the US either as a day to give pigs a break, learn about pigs or enjoy bacon, chops and other delicious meats.
