About JJ Thomson and Plumb Pudding Day
It is unknown with certainty why today became called Plum Pudding Day. The most logical reason appears to honor Nobel Prize winning physicist JJ Thomson.

Today could be the day in history that JJ Thomson created the Plum Pudding model of the atom in 1897, for which he received the Nobel Prize 1906. Prior to Thomson’s discovery the existence of negatively charged particles was unknown, and thus he is credited with the discovery and identification of the electron; and by default, the discovery of the first subatomic particle. Likewise Thomson is credited with finding the first evidence for isotopes of a stable (non-radioactive) element in 1913, as part of his exploration into the composition of canal rays (positive ions). He invented the mass spectrometer.

There is a ‘Plum Pudding Day’ in November, the Sunday prior to Advent. Plum Pudding is known as Christmas Pudding and the tradition of creating plum pudding is known as Stir-it-Up Sunday in the United Kingdom.
