About National Poetry Month

Academy of American Poets created National Poetry month in 1996. It’s a concentrated effort within schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets throughout the United States to celebrate poetry.

Promotions for National Poetry Month include:

Posters distributed to teachers, librarians and booksellers nationwide.

The Academy presents several special events and readings in April, including our star-studded annual Poetry & The Creative Mind.

Press releases

Resources for celebrating NPM, including tips for teaching poetry during April, creating a poetry book display in your bookstore or library, presenting a poetry reading or contest and more.

In addition to National Poetry Month, the year includes the following poetry events:
