About Safe Digging Month
National Safe Digging Month occurs each April since 2002 and was created by the US Senate to bring attention to homeowners of the National helpline for homeowners (811) that tells them where underground utility lines are located. Underground utilities include pipelines, electric, gas, telecommunications, water, sewer, and cable television lines. Each year homeowners inadvertently cause service disruptions to critical infrastructure by accidentally severing these lines. Results include service interruption, environmental damage, personal injury, and even death.
"Call 811 Before You Dig" is a nationwide campaign to increase public awareness.
