About the Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade
For over 400 years, more than 15 million men, women and children were the victims of the tragic transatlantic slave trade, one of the darkest chapters in human history.
The annual observance of 25 March as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade serves as an opportunity to honor and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system, and to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today.
1793 slavery ended in Haiti;
1833 slavery ended in Canada, the British West Indies and the Cape of Good Hope;
1843 slavery ended in India;
1848 slavery ended in France;
1853 slavery ended in Argentina;
1863 slavery ended in Dutch Colonies and became illegal in the United States;
1865 slavery ended in the United States;
1888 slavery ended in Brazil.
