About Sports Eye Safety Month
April is Sports Eye Safety Month sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. This month long focus on athletics and vision seeks to educate the public about the importance of eye health and empower them to preserve their sight. A simple way to do that relates to sports. Sports-related eye injuries range from abrasions of the cornea and bruises of the lids to internal eye injuries, such as retinal detachments and internal bleeding. The good news is, almost all sports-related eye injuries can be prevented using appropriate protective eye wear. Sports-related eye injury can be prevented if athletes wear appropriate, sport-specific protective eyewear properly fitted by an eye care professional.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology believes protective eye wear could prevent 40,000 injuries each year.
