SWALLOWING DISORDERS (DYSPHAGIA) MONTH, NTL.
About Swallowing Disorders Month
National Swallowing Disorders Month first came into being in 2008 by Congressional Decree. Over 15 million Americans are afflicted with this disorder called Dysphagia. Dysphagia is defined as the difficulty or inability to swallow and is caused by a neurological disorder or event (i.e. stroke, degenerative neurological diseases, head or neck cancer, Parkinson’s)
Having Dysphagia can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, choking, chronic malnutrition, severe life-threatening dehydration, an increased rate of infection, longer hospital stays, long-term institutional care and even death.
This month is set aside to draw attention to the disorder and raise funds toward finding a cure.
