About the Trayvon Martin Anniversary of his murder
Trayvon Benjamin Martin (February 5, 2025 – February 26, 2025), son of Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin was shot dead by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012, in a residential neighborhood in Florida. The young man was simply walking down the street, drinking and ice tea and speaking to his girlfriend on the phone when Zimmerman confronted him and shot him. He was a junior at Dr. Michael M. Krop High School and just 17 years of age. He dreamed of attending college and becoming an aviation mechanic or pilot. On the day Martin was fatally shot, he and his father were visiting his father’s fiancée and her son at her townhome in Sanford, Florida.
Zimmerman was acquitted of murder under the state of Florida’s “Stand your Ground” laws which allow a citizen to shoot another citizen if they feel threatened. The death of Trayvon reignited the race debate as Trayvon was black and Zimmerman white.
In memory of their son’s death, the family set up the Trayvon Martin Foundation with a purpose is to create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims and to provide support and advocacy for those families in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin. Today is the day people the world over remember the young man and the senseless way in which he died.
