About Dia National da Roupa de Baixo (Underwear Day) in Brazil
The aim of Dia Nacional da Roupa de Baixo (National Underwear Day) is to make people recognize the importance of these garments left unseen, but which are the first to be put on and the last to be taken off. It’s more of a publicity stunt in Brazil. Underwear Day also occurs in the United States each year, with a philanthropic edge designed to provide skivvies for the homeless and poor.

It’s amazing that this happens in Brazil. Yes, it is the home of the string bikini, but I remember when I lived in Brazil as a teenager, I made the mistake of going out into the public plaza in a tight t-shirt and cutoff jeans. When I came back in the house my host mother was incensed. “What a scandal you are causing the family going out dressed like that!”
I was confused, (I was also 16). My bathing suit consisted of four small triangles held together by string and I could wear that in public…awe, but only at the club, on private property or within two blocks of the ocean. Beyond that, it was considered scandalous. One needed to be properly dressed in certain circles. Aye mi! Therefore, this stunt of wearing underwear in public in Brazil, is very gutsy, which is why it gets press, even in the US!
