About National Youth Synthetic Drug Awareness Week
The US Senate designate the second full week of March as National Youth Synthetic Drug Awareness Week with a purpose of educating teens, parents and teachers of the dangers of synthetic drugs.
According to the CDC, 1 in every 9 high school seniors surveyed admitted to using synthetic marijuana in the past year. According to a 2013 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration Drug Abuse Warning Network, there were 28,531 emergency department visits involving a synthetic cannabinoid product and 22,904 emergency department visits involving bath salts in 2011
Common Synthetic Drugs, also known as Designer Drugs, fall into Sedatives, Cannabinoids, Anabolic Steroids, Erectile Dysfunction, Stimulants, Entactogens, Piperazine, Dissociatives, Psychedelics and Opioids. Street names include LSZ, Bromodragonfly, GBL China White, Bath salts, DMT, K2 and 2C-E.
Synthetic cannabis, the most commonly used synthetic drug is created by taking plant matter and spraying it with a chemical compound produced in a lab that mimics the effects of THC, the drug substance in pot.
