About National Reading Is Fun Week
"If you grew up in the 1970s or 1980s you probably remember RIF (Reading is Fundamental) launching. It was almost as ubiquitous as School House Rock for our generations.
Well, RIF is still around and doing what it has always done, getting books to children who don’t have access to them. Books can have an incredible effect on children’s lives, yet there’s only one book for every 300 kids living in underserved communities in the U.S.
With the proliferation of video and the internet, children aren’t reading anymore. They don’t even go for a drive in cars anymore without watching television. Reading transports children to new worlds. Increases their vocabulary, fosters imagination and helps them succeed in life. RIF and Reading is Fun week seek to invigorate children everywhere with the joy of reading for fun, for success and for life.
RIF serves more than 4 million children nationwide, with a focus on children from birth to age 8.
In 2010, RIF distributed 15 million books at 17,000 sites throughout the nation.
In 44 years, RIF has distributed more than 380 million free, new books to more than 33 million children.
RIF is supported by more than 400,000 volunteers nationwide."
