About the Hindu day of Buddha Purnima
"Buddha Purnima is commonly referred to as Buddha Day. This is the day in the Hindu faith shared with the Buddhist Faith that marks the dawning of the age of enlightenment known as nirvāna and death of Gautama Buddha. The exact date varies depending upon country and traditions. The most common date is this. It is based upon the moon and the sun’s position, however it falls on the full moon in Vaisakha, a month of the Buddhist calendar that is also shared by Hindus. Often the Buddhist celebration will start a day earlier based upon where the first full moon is seen.

The actual date varies from year to year but usually falls in April or May, but can be as late as June during Leap Years. Buddhist mark this day with meditation, observing the eight precepts, partaking of vegetarian food, giving to charity, ""bathing"" the Buddha statues. Traditionally Hindus set this day aside to bring happiness to the unfortunate including the elderly, handicapped and sick through the distribution of gifts in cash and kind to various charitable homes throughout the country. Vesak became an official Buddhist holiday in 1950 and it is the closest holiday in the Buddhist and Hindu calendars to the Christian celebration of Christmas."
