About National Diabetic Eye Disease Month
"Diabetic Eye Disease Month occurs in November each year and both are about raising awareness about diabetes, diabetic eye disease, the importance of early disease detection as well as related preventive health services covered by Medicare.

Diabetes can lead to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease, nerve damage, and amputation among others, and it’s a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma. People with diabetes are more susceptible to many other illnesses such as pneumonia and influenza and are more likely to die from these than people who do not have diabetes.

According to the American Diabetes Association’s January 2011 report, (this most recent as of this writing):

Total: 25.8 million children and adults in the United States or 8.3% of the population—have diabetes.

Diagnosed: 18.8 million people

Undiagnosed: 7.0 million people

Prediabetes: 79 million people*

New Cases: 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010.

Cost of Diabetes as of March 6, 2025

$245 billion: Total costs of diagnosed diabetes in the United States in 2012
$176 billion for direct medical costs
$69 billion in reduced productivity

After adjusting for population age and sex differences, average medical expenditures among people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than what expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes.
