About National DNA, Genomics & Stem Cell Education Month
"DNA, Genomics and Stem Cell Education and Awareness Month is sponsored each September by Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc.
Legal issues surround this research and it is an area of constant contention. Both the medical field and the legal field are continuing to feel their way through.
“This type of research is proceeding as quickly as ever, but few federal laws and a patchwork of state laws protect the privacy of research subjects. Also, the controversy over stem cells has not abated, leaving many who might be helped by them at a loss for possible treatment. There are additional controversies: how DNA data banks are used in police departments; the various implications of genetic testing, and the patentability of a person’s DNA, just to name a few.” notes legal brief section of the resource site Special Libraries Association.
The controversy stems from religious beliefs establishing life at conception, meaning all cells are therefore human life, once the egg and sperm meet. Opposing are scientists and others who point to how stem cells, DNA and Genomics may one day find cures for many diseases such as Cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and others. Stem cells can come from abortions as well as cord blood when the baby is born.
