& The LEEP
You probably have a dictionary and thesaurus sitting on your desk. The LEEP rounds out the must-have, often-referenced tools for business owners, executives and teachers.

How many times have you been listening to the news and heard the reporter say "Today is ______", and you could kick yourself because if you'd known it was that day, week or month, and that subject would have made an excellent time for a product launch, promotion or learning opportunity to tie current events into your lesson plan?

Of course you didn't know...so the opportunity is lost. With the LEEP, it's highly unlikely that will ever happen again.

Whether you're a teacher or business executive, a large portion of your day is spent teaching those who depend upon you, delegating assignments and keeping your eye on the big picture.

If you're a business executive, The LEEP will help you optimize your marketing and public relations budget by allowing you to pick the most opportune time to launch a new product, court the press with timely stories and piggy back on the PR efforts of others to stretch the reach of your message and optimize it is heard. The LEEP will make your job easier...not to mention make you a heck of a lot more fun at networking events. People love little random factoids and knowing what today is...it's a fabulous icebreaker.

If you're a teacher, your students have probably complained on occasion, "Why do we have to know this stuff?" or "What does this have to do with my life?" It doesn't matter if your students are six or twenty-six; if they can't see how what you're teaching them applies to their life, it is soon forgotten. I remember being one of those students. I struggled with math and science until two teachers made the difference. The first was my chemistry teacher in Brazil. He threw out the text book and dictated the lessons. This forced me to learn Portuguese very quickly but he also brought in real world examples so we could see how the lessons applied. He was an amazing teacher.

The second was my math professor in college. He brought in pictures of industry and showed us how the equations we were learning applied in the real world. Suddenly math got interesting. And even though it was my toughest subject and I applied myself with vigor. Context and application make the difference between boring and interesting. Whether you teach math and science, history, English, social studies or poly-sci, The LEEP is full of daily, monthly and weekly events that bring real-world application and understanding into your classroom.

SOURCES

Sources include the US and other nations' governments, the United Nations, various professional organizations, non-profits and NGOs, news stories, public and private institutions, websites and cultural customs. We've also included current events as they unfold, events we feel will continue to impact culture, commerce and society including the major uprisings in the Arab Spring, major disasters and Occupy Wall Street movement.

One caveat of course. The LEEP deals with dynamic information and thousands of different sources and each date is therefore 'subject to change without notice.' Strikes, weather, disasters, wars and a litany of things can cause dates to move. Still, it's the closest thing you'll ever have to a crystal ball...and 1000 times more reliable.

IF YOU ARE AN EXECUTIVE or BUSINESS OWNER
  1. Use The LEEP to generate more revenue.

Plan product launches the media will be focusing on complimentary subjects. This increases your ability to get press coverage if you can tie your news into a current event. For example, if you are releasing a book on diabetes, October and November have several weekly, daily and monthly events designed to bring awareness to the public about diabetes maintenance, treatment, avoidance and living with the disease. This would be the ideal time to plan a book tour.

  2. b) Use The LEEP for advertising and promotional planning.

Most marketing is planned 6-18 months in advance. Traditionally, fiscal years begin in September and budgets are finalized in July and August for the next year. The heightened awareness due to the PR push will make their products/services more desirable during that time.

  3. c) Use The LEEP to form strategic alliances with complimentary companies.

The calendar is a tremendous icebreaker for new business development and a great strategy for securing that first meeting.

  4. d) Use The LEEP to discover new markets, products and opportunities.

The LEEP is full of events designed to raise awareness about different issues ranging from the environment and health to science and technology as well as cultural events celebrated by different religious and ethnic groups. In the hands of a visionary, The LEEP is a book of opportunity.
